Surrealism

Largely influenced by Dada, surrealism was developed in Europe by poet André Breton in Paris in 1924. Surrealism is best known for its uncommon and surprising visual artworks meant to liberate thought and human experience from rationalism. Surrealism first began as a literary movement, rejecting literalism and traditional writing conventions. It had a distinct relationship with politics, namely Communism and Anarchism, due to its emphasis on liberation of free thought from repressive social structures. Surrealism still has a distinct hold in the Postmodernist movement and popular culture in contemporary society, from poets such as Allen Ginsberg all the way to filmmakers like David Lynch.
