A movement that originated in the 1950s that refers to artists, mostly British and American, who drew inspiration from popular and commercial culture, rather than the fine or ‘high’ arts. Pop artists typically employed appropriated imagery from ads, comics, or other kitschy elements. It typically functioned as a commentary on consumerism and media. In a number of ways, Pop Art is an extension of Dadaism, however where Dadaism is often anarchistic and satirical, pop art is more humorous in its detachment from mass consumer culture. Pop Art remains popular worldwide and continues to develop its aesthetics, notably in Postmodern art with Superflat, developed by Takashi Murakami, as well as American hybrids of this style called “SoFlo Superflat.”
