Sometimes referred to as conceptualism, it is a 20th century art movement that values intention, idea, and concept over aesthetic and material concerns. Conceptual art owes its beginnings to Marcel Duchamp (Fountain, 1917), notably his ‘readymades.’ Duchamp popularized the concept of creating art from objects or products not typically considered suitable for artmaking. Conceptualism emerged as an artistic movement in the 1960s as a reaction against Formalism, from which Modern art was derived. It is also a reaction against the commodification of art, rejecting the idea that galleries or museums are the ultimate institution in which the value of art is decided.
