Baroque

Having followed Renaissance art and Mannerism, Baroque encompassed a wide variety of arts including sculpture, dance, painting, architecture, and music. For the most part, it flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until around the 1740s. In the Spanish and Portuguese empires, however, it continued to be popular until the 1810s. It was a style that had incredible support from the Catholic Church, who wanted to counter the art and architecture of the Protestant Church, which was considered to be simple and austere in nature. As such, Baroque featured incredible ornamentation and focus on dramatism, especially in the decorative arts and in architecture. It also emphasizes motion in its visual arts, which allows it to more clearly exhibit tension and a sense of exuberance.
