I have been wanting to shoot at this location for years and it took me being locked down for over 70 days to finally do it. My first shot back after quarantine had to be a powerful one and I went out here with one certain photo in mind. I wanted to let myself play, with no expectations, just enjoying a camera and the sand. We walked a total of 5 miles around these dunes and climbed over 40 floors up and down throughout the day. The moment I saw this dune and the clouds I could see this exactly how it is in my mind. I was far away from my camera bags and only had 3 frames of Ilford black and white film left in my Hasselblad. Fortunately, I only needed one frame for this. I yelled out to the model to walk up the hill and she was so far away she could barely hear me, but when she made it to the top she stopped exactly where I pointed. At that moment I realized serious direction was out the window and knowing I didn't have another roll of film closer than a 10-minute walk I yelled out to her, "Be a lion." She knew exactly what I meant, which is why I like shooting the same people more than once because we have worked together over 100 times and there is shorthand with those 3 words. She knew exactly what I wanted and how I wanted it to feel. She executed it to perfection, like the moment was waiting for us the whole time.
