African Ostrich
Medium: Digital C-Print on Archival Photographic Paper

Sometimes you only get one frame, and it just so happens to be the perfect pose. I consider myself lucky to have captured Catalina as well as I did. We had very limited time with her because she’s not only a big bird but also a fast one. Ostriches can also be very dangerous—their defense mechanism is to raise their massive talons and kick the hell out of a predator. In order to keep her and everyone on set safe, Catalina’s trainers brought in a 20- by-20-foot metal fence to put around her. Each time I was ready to take a photo, the trainers would open the fence just long enough for me to get one single shot.
