San Vittorino Socialite with Dachshund -- Donna Mirta Barberini-Colonna di Sciarra walks with her dachshund beneath the ancient walls of San Vittorino, a feudal town near Rome that has belonged to her family since the 17th Century. Dachshunds, or "badger dogs" in German, are members of the hound family that historically has been used to scent, chase, and hunt badgers and other small ground dwelling animals. Dachshunds love the outdoors and are energetic and entertaining companions. Published in LIFE November 4, 1957.
