The Academy of Music in Philadelphia first opened in 1857 and it is the oldest extant opera house in America. The “Grande Olde Lady of Locust Street” has hosted notable performers with an open horseshoe auditorium and two tiered balconies in a Baroque Revival treatment. The 5,000lb crystal chandelier once contained gas jets for light.
