Taking their cues from the surrounding views of the Long Island Sound, architect Howard Lathrop, principal at SellarsLathrop Architects, and designer Jennifer Gresinger created a minimalist 8,000-square-foot home for a busy couple in Westport, Connecticut.

A growing collection of black river rocks in a walnut frame highlights the matching floating walnut staircase in the entryway. On the opposite side, a wall of interlocking glass links handmade by Angelo Mangiarotti anchors a wall of Jerusalem limestone tiles.

The sunroom is used year-round, with bifold doors by La Cantina that open the space to the outside in the summer months. Indoor-outdoor furniture and fabric from Dedon provide a chic weather-resistant solution.

In a large open kitchen with bar seating and plenty of streamlined storage space for the client’s beloved books, a statement light fixture by Artemide hangs over a stone table by Ligne Roset and white leather chairs by Cassina.

“White and gray with natural wood accents is a theme that runs throughout,” says Gresinger. The island top, designed by Lathrop in close collaboration with the owners, is made of stainless steel with a nondirectional finish.

Creating a multipurpose dining space that could host the clients’ three college-age children as well as large dinner parties was the main objective for the dining room. A custom expandable table by Lathrop and chairs by Philippe Starckanchor the space; textured wallcoverings by Witzner from Pollack add depth to the Jerusalem limestone tiles.

Nineteen-foot ceilings draw the eye up to the graphic lacquered and blackened-steel staircase and beams in the living room. Polished concrete floors, Saarinen Womb chairs, and a custom Lucite cocktail table by Plexi-Craft allow the three large-scale works by local Connecticut artist Ayn Kraven to be the focal point of the room.

“An all-white room can be a bit sterile. The wood ceiling warms the space,” says Lathrop of the tongue-and-groove straight-grain fir that continues from the bedroom onto the overhangs of the balcony soffits. A custom Missoni pillow offers a pop of color against leather slipper chairs from Design Within Reachand bedding by Sferra.

The neutral color palette of the living space continues into the bath, where translucent glass tiles in the shower stand out against a Turkish marble floor and countertop. The custom-made vanity stool was upholstered in Brentano fabric by Pollack.

To follow strict conservation and zoning rules, Howard built a new pool within the old one and used wood slat tiles over gravel for the deck. “The top edge of the pool on the water side is made out of glass to create a sense of being one with nature,” Lathrop says. In keeping with the neutral color palette, Gresinger chose outdoor furniture from Crate and Barrel and umbrellas by Tucci.
