Scala dei Turchi is an amazing rock formation in southern Sicily which translates to "Turkish Stairs". It’s bright white surface comes from the formation of Mari, a white sedimentary rock but in reality in feels more like it’s coated in baby powder and is super soft and fragile. I always loved the surreal look of these rocks and traveled to Sicily just to shoot them in 2019 and was in awe of them rising from the water. I returned in 2021, but because of how quickly the area was eroding, the Italian authorities took over the site and have closed it down. Today you can still see it from a distance but can no longer explore and leave covered in the fine powder that rubs off and covers you and everything you brought with you.
